abstract = "Agroecology is an ecological management practice of natural
resources with proposals for participatory development and for
establishing relations between production and consumption, thus
capable of facing an ecological and social crisis. Specifically,
this paper aims to assess growing sugarcane monoculture and to
reflect on the possible socio-environmental and agricultural
impacts, through land use and land cover mapping techniques.
Images of TM and OLI Landsat sensors were used to map the land use
and land cover (2015), to delimit areas with sugarcane plantation
(2000 and 2015) and also used for a temporal comparison. IBGE
statistical data on the rural production in Itapuranga city
provided support for the analysis of rural production. The results
show that there was an increase of 1325% in sugarcane cultivation
area over 15 years, period comprised in this study (2000 - 2015),
which consequently implies the occurrence of impacts on the
environment through soil disturbance by causing more soil
particles loss and more use of agrochemicals (according to
sources, about 4.84 liters per hectare), and so contaminating soil
and water. Therefore, the results indicate that the expansion of
sugarcane can lead damages to the environment and to the health of
the population, specially to rural workers, if management and
worker protection measures are not implemented.",
